Working with epoxy resin is an incredibly rewarding process, but crafting in Malaysia comes with a unique set of environmental challenges. When you're dealing with tropical ambient temperatures (often hitting 30–40°C) and sticky, high humidity, resin can behave unpredictably. Whether you are creating jewelry, coasters, or larger pieces for Malaysia Clay Art, mastering your local climate is the key to crystal-clear, flawless results.
Epoxy resin relies on an exothermic (heat-generating) chemical reaction to cure. In ideal conditions, room temperature sits around 22–24°C, but Malaysia's tropical heat drastically accelerates this process.
Shorter Pot Life: The "pot life" (your working time before the resin starts to gel) will be significantly reduced. A resin that usually gives you 45 minutes of working time might start thickening in just 15 to 20 minutes on a hot afternoon.
Flash Curing: If you mix a large batch of resin in a deep cup, the combined ambient heat and the chemical heat can cause a "flash cure". The resin will get dangerously hot, smoke, and harden instantly, ruining your batch.
Faster Curing Speed: The silver lining is that your pieces will cure faster. A general rule of thumb is that the chemical reaction rate doubles for every 10°C increase in ambient temperature.
Tips for High Heat:
Mix Smaller Batches: Prepare less resin at a time to reduce heat buildup in your mixing cup.
Timing is Everything: Pour your resin during the cooler hours of the early morning or late evening.
Use Wide, Shallow Containers: Spreading your mixed resin in a wider container disperses the heat, giving you a few extra minutes of pot life.
While heat speeds things up, moisture is the true enemy of clear resin. Malaysia's high relative humidity introduces water molecules into the air, which interferes directly with the cross-linking process between the epoxy and the amine hardener.
This moisture reaction results in a frustrating defect known as amine blush.
If your cured resin has a sticky, greasy, waxy, or cloudy white film on the surface, you are dealing with amine blush. It can make a beautiful, transparent piece look dull and prevent any future topcoats from adhering properly.

Control Your Environment: The most reliable fix is working in an air-conditioned room or using a dehumidifier to bring the relative humidity below 60% (ideally closer to 50%).
Dry Your Materials: Ensure all your molds, mixing cups, and inclusions (like dried flowers or wood) are 100% dry. Even a tiny amount of moisture can trigger cloudiness.
Avoid Rainy Days: If a tropical thunderstorm is rolling in, it might be best to postpone your pour. Opening windows during or after rain will spike the indoor humidity.
If you do end up with a hazy, blushed surface, don't panic! Because amine blush is water-soluble, you can easily clean it off.
Wait until the piece is fully cured.
Wipe the surface with a soft cloth dampened with warm water and a grease-cutting dish soap.
Dry it completely. If you need to add another layer of resin, lightly sand the clean surface first to ensure a strong bond.
By controlling your batch sizes and keeping your workspace as dry and cool as possible, you can beat the tropical weather and create stunning, glass-like resin art every time!
