When diving into DIY crafting, resin art, or polymer clay sculpting, creating your own custom silicone moulds opens up endless creative freedom. However, choosing between the two primary formats—two-part liquid silicone and instant silicone putty—can quickly become confusing.
While both materials produce flexible, reusable moulds suitable for polymer clay, UV resin, epoxy, and wax, they behave very differently during preparation and curing. The optimal choice depends on project scale, required detail, and available time.
| Feature | Two-Part Liquid Silicone | Instant Silicone Putty |
| Mixing Method | Liquid A + B (Mix & Pour) | Equal Part Kneading (Knead & Press) |
| Curing Time | 6 to 24 hours | 15 to 30 minutes |
| Detail Capture | Micro-details, high clarity & sheen | Medium detail, quick impression |
| Setup Required | Requires a sealed mould box | No mould box needed |
| Air Bubbles | Requires degas or slow pour | Traps air if not rolled evenly |
| Best For | Complex 3D figures, flat charms, glossy pieces | Quick 3D impressions, repair work, fast prototypes |
Liquid silicone consists of two liquid parts (Part A and Part B) that, when mixed by ratio or weight, flow smoothly around a master object.

Micro-Detail Capture: Liquid silicone easily flows into microscopic textures, deep undercuts, and fine grooves. It captures the original piece's exact glossy or matte finish.
Bubble-Free Clarity: Because it is a pourable liquid, air bubbles rise to the surface naturally (or can be removed using a vacuum chamber).
Ideal for Complex Geometry: Perfect for casting full 3D figurines, intricate jewelry, or multi-piece split moulds.
Prep Work Required: Requires building a leak-proof mould box around the master object.
Longer Wait Time: Requires 6 to 24 hours to cure before demoulding.
Silicone putty features a clay-like consistency, usually combined in equal 1:1 ratios by hand. Once mixed, it is pressed directly onto or around the master object.
Rapid Speed: Sets fast, usually ready for demoulding in 15 to 30 minutes.
Zero Container Prep: No need to build a container or mould box; simply knead and press.
No-Drip Handling: Excellent for capturing details on vertical surfaces or fixed objects that cannot be submerged in a liquid container.
Lower Detail Capture: Thick putty cannot penetrate ultra-fine crevices as effectively as liquid silicone.
Risk of Distortion: Pressing too hard can distort delicate clay or thin master pieces.

( Two-Part Liquid ) ( Silicone Putty )

Flat Charms & Coasters: Flat items need a smooth top surface. Liquid silicone levels itself out horizontally, producing a flat base.
High-Gloss Resin Pieces: Liquid silicone copies the mirror-shine surface of polished masters faithfully.
Complex 3D Figures: Intricate miniatures with delicate arms, wings, or deep undercuts need liquid silicone to prevent air gaps.
Quick 3D Clay Miniature Impressions: When sculpting polymer clay miniatures, pushing clay into a quick putty mould saves hours of manual carving.
Textured Cabochons & Stamps: Simple push-moulds for buttons, gems, or leaf textures perform well with putty.
On-the-Fly Crafting: Great for quick fixes or instant crafting sessions without waiting overnight.
For makers in Malaysia's tropical climate, keep these practical tips in mind:
Temperature & Humidity: High humidity and ambient temperatures ( 28 C to 34 C) accelerate curing times. Putty pot-life can shorten to under 90 seconds, while liquid silicone cures significantly faster than standard package estimates.
Storage: Store both silicone parts in a cool, dry area away from direct sunlight to prevent premature thickening.
Inhibition Warning: Avoid using sulfur-based modeling clays or latex gloves, as sulfur inhibits platinum-cure silicone from curing properly, leaving a sticky residue.
