Polymer clay is a very popular material for hobbies, art, and school projects. In Malaysia, more and more people are getting into Malaysia Clay Art to make things like cute earrings, local food miniatures, or keychains.
Because it is a type of plastic clay, many beginners ask: Is it safe to use? Will the fumes make me sick? Can I bake it in my home oven?
Let’s look at the facts in simple, easy-to-understand language.
Good quality Polymer Clay Malaysia shops sell is non-toxic. This means it does not contain dangerous chemicals that will poison you if you touch it.
Even though the clay is non-toxic, you still need to follow a few common-sense safety rules.
If you use a plastic roller, a knife, or a fork to shape your clay, do not use them for food ever again. Keep a separate box for your clay tools. Do not mix them with your kitchen utensils.
Baked polymer clay is still slightly porous (it has tiny, invisible holes). This means it can trap bacteria from food and is hard to wash completely clean.
Safe: Making earrings, keychains, fridge magnets, or decorating the outside of a glass jar.
Not Safe: Making a bowl for your rice, a plate for your food, or a cup for your milo.

This is the most important rule! Polymer clay needs to be baked in an oven to become hard. Usually, the temperature must be between 110°C and 135°C (check your clay packaging).
If the temperature is right: The clay will smell a little bit like warm plastic. This is normal and safe.
If the temperature is too hot: The clay will burn. Burned clay creates black smoke and a sharp, stinging smell. This smoke can hurt your eyes and lungs.
Tip: Do not trust your oven dial blindly. Buy a small, cheap oven thermometer to put inside your oven so you can see the exact temperature. If your clay accidentally burns, open all the windows, turn on the fan, and leave the room until the smoke is gone.
Always wash your hands with soap and water after you finish playing with raw clay. It is a good habit so you do not accidentally swallow any clay residue when you eat your meals.
